Pal-Think for Strategic Studies held the first radio episode on Monday, February 5, 2018, entitled “Violence Definition and its Causes and Forms” on Radio Alwan in the Gaza Strip. This came as a part of “The Benefits of Non-Violence as a Culture and Instrument for Conflict Resolution” project, funded by FXB International. This episode is based on Pal-Think’s mission and its emphasis that nonviolence is a peaceful way of life and development. It also focuses on the homogeneity of ideas and community peace, and how society needs such a thriving culture.
The episode aimed at raising awareness of Palestinian society about nonviolence definition and its causes and forms. It was attended by Dr. Khaled Dahlan, consultant psychiatrist, and neurologist, and two project participants: Short Story Writer, Neveen Al-Ghoul and Journalist activist, Abdulsalam Mortaja.
Dr. Khaled started by emphasizing Pal-Think’s interest in promoting and disseminating the culture of nonviolence. He added that violent behavior is adaptable and immutable; there are many factors that strengthen violence, including family and community formation. Furthermore, he mentioned forms of violence, such as political and psychological violence, the most dangerous ones. He stressed on the blockade of the Gaza Strip which has been affecting all life aspects of citizens; it generated hatred and anger among them, leading to self, religious, and gender-based violence.
Ms. Neveen Al-Ghoul said: “ Family violence is the basis of all forms of violence”. She illustrated how sons’ deprivation of their rights and sense of safety within their family lead basically to feelings of persecution and inferiority, making them adopt violence as a means of defense. Besides, she confirmed that media and cinema have a large role in increasing individuals tendency towards violence.
Mr. Abdulsalam Mortaja spoke about violence impact on societies, especially on youth, stressing on how youth are the most negatively affected group by violence and its several forms. To clarify, he noted that recently we hear about young people who have come to commit suicide in the Gaza Strip.
Finally, all participants stressed the need to spread the culture of nonviolence and to work hard so as consolidate it through workshops and educational seminars.
